A Butterfly Habit

Flitting and fluttering, the butterfly skims the surface of flowers, trees, and bushes. It flies so close that you think you could reach out and touch it; but when you try, it darts away again. Then all of a sudden, it lands. You expect it to fly away suddenly, but instead, it spreads its wings, as if posing for a camera—all of its beauty and wonder on full display.

We can flit and flutter through life like the butterfly—always in motion, always busy, always going somewhere or making the next stop in our hectic daily schedule. But we can “flutter away” more productively and joyfully if ...

De-Stressing

We had another “stress test” recently. A plumbing problem upstairs caused water to pour through a downstairs light fixture onto a wood floor that isn’t supposed to get wet. That started six weeks of dust, claustrophobia, and waiting for things to be fixed.

I have fresh evidence that stress can be caused by impatience, uncertainty, and the “gloomies,” and I’m trying to apply the following “Lessons from Home.”

1. Displace impatience with a ...

Finding Our Place in Life

Finding “our place” in life can sometimes be a long process. We want a place that is secure, that is uniquely ours, and that is enjoyable and heartwarming. We want a place from which we can launch out into life’s circumstances and relationships and navigate them well. We want a home base that ...

Stress Relievers: Hold Your Soul Close to God

Life, circumstances, and some people can hold our souls close to harm—things that discourage us, ruin our self-image, entice us to take up bad attitudes or habits, or cause us to doubt what we know is true and good. When our souls are held close to harm for too long, attitudes can form that isolate us from other people such as “I don’t need anyone,” or “Don’t mess with me.” We can become angry or hopeless, convinced that things will never get better for us.

But there’s a solution. We can choose to hold our souls close to God. We can do it with prayer, Bible study, church attendance, spiritual songs, remembering Scripture, and so forth. In Him, we can find relief from burdens, confusion, sorrow, heaviness, uncertainty, and coldness. Close to God, we find ...

Stress Relievers: Focusing on the Goal

Focusing only on the goal, the “destination,” of what I’m working on, makes me impatient. I realized that the goal isn’t the only important thing. The process of reaching the goal is also important. Every day ...

Stress Relievers

"Stress" is the word that will be written across the year 2013 in my memory. It began when my mom passed away in January. It was difficult to grasp the reality that she is no longer here, and it was hard to see all of her treasures being dispersed from her home. Then we had to do some work on her house to get it ready to sell. We had a few bumps along the way as we were trying to find contractors. A few weeks later, we started a new business, and not many of the scores of details were accomplished easily. We had learning curves, roadblocks, time delays, and a few "you-can't-do-this-before-you-do-that" detours. As the year rolled along, a few surprises were mixed in. I was getting overwhelmed.

One morning in my prayer a time a thought that has helped me came to mind--"Use the stress release valves." ...

Lessons from Home - Introduction

“Lessons from Home” are those bits of wisdom and encouragement that we learned when we were growing up, the ones passed down to us from those who love us. We may have received insights from an older brother or sister about how to be a good friend, from our mom about the value of faithfulness and loyalty, or from our dad about the practical expressions of honor.

The worth of these lessons became clear as we grew older. They added quality to our relationships and daily lives. We found that ...
