Your White Line

It was the worst fog I’d ever been in. A few nights ago, a lazy cloud settled on the earth, making driving nearly impossible. Visibility was fifteen feet at best, and our car’s high beams only revealed more fog. So slowly our family traveled home, with the car staying close to the only visible sign of direction—the road’s solid white line. Even the double yellow line in the middle of the road was engulfed by fog and the glare of oncoming traffic. What kept us sane and moving forward—that security-giving, nerve-calming white line.

God’s Word is our white line. When we can’t see anything else, when we don’t know what direction to take, we can follow the sense of direction given in God’s Word. Truth is our compass. The Holy Spirit is our Guide. We can do the good things that Scripture and the Spirit tell us to do.

Not sure whether to take that job opportunity? Ask God for wisdom (James 1:5), and give all you’ve got to your current job (Colossians 3:17, 23-24).

Not sure which degree to pursue? Be faithful with what God’s given you to do already (Matthew 25:21), and seek His plan for your life (Jeremiah 29:11).

Not sure how to handle a difficult relationship? Let love prevail (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). Ask for God’s way to handle the situation, and practice kindness and longsuffering in the meantime (Colossians 3:12-13).

Not sure how you’ll make it out of this storm? Hold fast to God (Deuteronomy 30:20), His promises (Matthew 6:30-31), and His love (John 15:9).

God is going to take care of us. He guides us as a good shepherd and loves us as a perfect father. In every fog of night, in every ferocious storm, in every seemingly out-of-control situation, His love blankets our hearts with peace, and His truth guides our steps. In every bend of the road, He is with us, reassuring us He will never leave and He will guide us to our destination (Deuteronomy 31:8). Take heart in the truths and promises of God’s Word. When you can’t see your way clearly, follow its white line, and depend on God to lead you home.
