Forward: A Poem for the New Year

by Katy Kauffman

"And the LORD, He is the one who goes before you.
He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you;
Do not fear nor be dismayed."
Deuteronomy 31:8 NKJV

On this cold winter’s evening,

I think about this year’s plight.

Days it was hard just being,

Trying to have enough might.

Now the journey continues,

New joys but also trials.

Challenges, difficult news.

What will be in future miles?

A verse leaps from the pages—

He goes before you this year.

Who? The God of the ages,

Conquering every fear.

The God who parted the seas,

The Lord of heaven and earth,

The King who sets captives free,

The One who has matchless worth.

He goes before us, ‘tis true.

Light illuminates His way.

He guides our souls, me and you,

As long as with Him we stay.

Let His light defeat your fears.

Let His love conquer your doubt.

He is with us through the years,

With us on every mount.

When I walk in the valley,

I won’t fear shadow or rain.

Lord, You are always with me,

In the new joys and the pain.

You turn each night to sunrise,

You turn each storm to freedom.

I will watch my strength arise

As I serve in Your kingdom.

For storms wash away weakness,

They purify, shape, refine.

I won’t drown in the bleakness,

But make the most of the time.

So walk on, my Lord, guide me.

I will follow You each day.

Use my life for Your glory.

Precious Father, lead the way!

This is as lovely as I've ever read. Makes me want to write poetry. Moreover, I'm reminded how present our God is now. And, in every new year and every new place.
His blessings to you and yours in 2018!

Thank you so much for your comments, Becky! It means a lot. God has helped me not to be afraid of trials because I've seen Him be there for us and He's made His promises in His Word certain in my heart. May He bless you and your family in 2018, and please keep writing! I'd love to read your poetry if you ever decide to write some. Happy New Year!
