through His Word
by Katy Kauffman
One day when I was on my way to a college class, I encountered a downpour unlike any other I can remember. My windshield wipers couldn’t move fast enough for the onslaught of water. I thought about pulling over and waiting it out, but I wasn’t sure where.
Then I saw a pickup truck ahead of me. Its flashers were on, and it became my guide as we traveled thirty miles per hour down the highway. I could see just enough road around the truck to make sure the driver was staying in his lane. I rounded curves as he did, and we made it out of the torrent alive and in one piece.
I’ve never thought of Jesus as a truck driver, but if there is anyone who can drive the highway of life and help us arrive at our destination in one piece, it’s Jesus. He knows how fast or slow to travel, and He’s ready for when an onslaught of surprises, temptations, or troubles comes our way. He has the grace to see us through it.
Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 2:1 NKJV
Paul used these words not only to encourage Timothy, his spiritual son, but to tell him how to keep going. How to persevere when he was experiencing a barrage of persecution and opposition to the gospel. Grace is a resource God gives us so we don’t quit. When problems, trials, and storms threaten to overwhelm us and stop our forward momentum, we can draw upon the grace of Christ to persevere.
Grace is not just for salvation; it’s for our daily Christian lives. And its source is a Person who never tires and never falters. He is strong for every challenge and heartache. For every opportunity and adventure. And He enables us to be strong—to have the desire and ability to do God’s will. To have grace.
“Be strong is the message, not just for Timothy, but for us also. For the road that lies before you, for the work you’ve been given to do, for the relationships you’ve been entrusted with, be strong. Don’t quit. Don’t give up. Depend on God’s ability to enable you. Depend on His grace.
We were never meant to travel life’s road alone. Life is a partnership with Jesus. In Christ, we have a Savior, a Friend, a Guide, and a Sustainer. Living powerfully each day means living in connection with Him. Through a close, vital relationship with Jesus—in which we abide in Him and He abides in us (John 15:4)—He supplies the strength we need for each day’s journey. The truth and love we receive from Him and the fellowship we share with Him infuse us with power to keep going. He is the One who meets our needs perfectly. Since He has all knowledge, He knows exactly what we need. Since He has all power, He has the ability to give us exactly what we need.
One of the delightful blessings of a relationship with God is that He makes His grace available to us. This grace comes in different packages. God’s grace takes the form of renewed enthusiasm when we have lost our fervor, peace when anxiety has overtaken our hearts, and a fresh perspective on a tough situation or relationship. God’s grace is a relief to our hearts and victory to our souls. His grace enables us to overcome weakness, fear, and worry. It enables us to do what we can’t do on our own. We can draw from the love, victory, courage, and forgiveness found in Christ. His grace never runs out. When we stay close to Him and depend on Him, we will have what we need for every part of life and ministry. Ask Him for what you need.”
- 2 Timothy: Winning the Victory, Day 13, page 701
Whatever you are facing today, I pray that you face it with Jesus and look to Him for the peace, strength, relief, or wisdom you need. God’s grace enables us to win battles that we can’t win on our own, and God’s Champion—Jesus Himself—is always with us. Follow Jesus down life’s highway, and draw upon His grace for every downpour.
