The Measure of a Man

Tall, dark, and handsome. “Short, furry, and funny,” to quote Robin Williams. It’s easy to describe a man’s appearance in three words. But what about his heart? What three words would you use to describe a real man or a godly man? My writers group on Facebook answered like this:

Eyes on Jesus

Leads his family

Patient, kind, humble

Becoming like Christ

Wise, instructed, understanding

Selfless, servant-minded, lovable

Seeks Jesus first

Loves Jesus best!

As I thought about what three words I would use, a verse came to mind. It showcases the exact three words I was thinking about: honorable, loving, and God-focused.

“He has shown you, O man, what is good;
and what does the LORD require of you
but to do justly, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God?”
Micah 6:8 NKJV

After God’s people realized how much they had turned away from God, they needed direction to know how to get back on His path, how to follow Him and His ways. This verse told them, and it tells us today what God is looking for in each of us. We can pray this verse for the men we know—for our fathers, husbands, sons, boyfriends, or friends. The world today needs godly men who aren’t afraid to take a stand for what is right and to humbly walk with God no matter what. Do you know of such a man?

Do you admire a man who is honorable? Honor is limiting ourselves so that we don’t harm anyone, and it’s exerting ourselves to do people good. Micah 6:8 says that what God wants is that we “do justly”—we don’t oppress anyone or harm them, but we give them what is due to them.1 We are fair, trustworthy, and self-controlled. A man whose character is honorable will be trustworthy as a father, husband, and friend, and will seek to do others good and help them, not hurt them (even unintentionally).

“To love mercy.” A godly man or woman not only walks in justice, but in compassion, love, and generosity. The greatness of a man’s heart is determined by the greatness of his love. When he loves, he is acting like Jesus in everyday situations. To love God and to love others are the greatest commandments (Mark 12:30-31). A man who loves like God does, is a keeper.

So many distractions, ideologies, and pursuits clamor for our attention in this world. A godly man pursues the heart of God. He walks humbly with God, always in awe of who God is and knowing he needs Him. He stays God-focused, mindful of God’s eternal purposes as he goes about his daily life and work. He makes sound decisions because he stays close to God and seeks His direction. He walks in joy because he delights in fellowshiping with God and following Him.

If I wanted to find such a man, I wouldn’t have to look very far. I have written this post in a honor of a man whom I love very much, a man whose birthday is today—my dad. He has shown me what it means to be honorable, loving, and God-focused. He has taught me what the heart of God looks like by living it. I can relate to God better as a heavenly Father because of the love of my dad.

So thank you, Dad. You’ve taught me what to admire in a man and what to look for in friends and a future sweetheart. You were trustworthy with my little girl dreams, and you have supported me in big endeavors. I am grateful not only to know someone like you, but to claim you as Daddy. Happy Birthday, and may this new year be filled with many great adventures.

What do you admire in a man who is godly? Tell me in the comments below, and may we pray that the men of our nation seek after God and His ways. May each of us do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.

First of all, Happy Birthday Rick!
I echo your prayers for the men of our nation. I also agree with the qualities of a godly man that you have listed.
I would add, "strong and courageous" like Joshua. A man of God should not be ashamed of the Gospel and share it with others. He should stand up for God, God's Word and His people. And he should be strong enough to admit his faults and grow from them as he faithfully follows the Lord.
Thanks for allowing me to share,

Simple concepts, but quite true, and sadly, not easy to find. What a wonderful way to honor your father. I'm sure he's quite proud to have you as a daughter.
