A Pow in the Gut

by Katy Kauffman

I was standing at the three-point line on the basketball court. Our team was playing defense under the other team’s goal. One of their players shot the ball, but it didn’t go in. Instantly I started running. As point guard, I needed to get to our side of the court in case one of our girls caught the rebound.

Tiffany was built for sports. She could run, shoot, and throw the ball with amazing power. When she caught the rebound, I knew she would be throwing it in my direction. By the time she launched the basketball, I had made it to our side of the court, near the three-point line. When the ball reached me, it had such power that it went through my hands and landed in my gut. “Pow!” The noise reverberated through the whole gym, and as if on cue, the crowd said in unison, “Oooh!”

Be Strong

by Katy Kauffman

There were three reasons why Joshua could have been dismayed by God’s call to be the next leader of Israel: over a million Israelites, hundreds of square miles to conquer, and fearsome enemies. His assignment was to lead the people across the Jordan River to possess the land which God had promised to give them. Joshua was supposed to fill Moses’ shoes as a spiritual leader of the people, a people who had stubbornly resisted Moses’ leadership and the leadership of God.

For the great task set before Joshua, God told him three times to be strong and of good courage (Joshua 1:6, 7, 9). Joshua would need strength to overcome weakness, courage to overcome fear, and faith to overcome doubt.

Where would Joshua’s strength, courage, and faith come from? The LORD Himself. God reassured him, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you” (Josh 1:5). God’s Word would also help Joshua to lead the people. Success would come from observing God’s law, which explains how to love God and one another. Joshua had the LORD and the Word to strengthen him for the journey ahead.

When our journey seems long or the task ahead seems difficult, we have God and His Word to keep us going. He says to us, “Be strong and of good courage. I am with you.” He renews our zeal and energizes our spirits for the work and ministry He calls us to. God gives us a special resource in Christ to do our assignment, a resource that the apostle Paul encouraged Timothy, his son in the faith, to tap into.

Grace for Every Downpour

by Katy Kauffman

One day when I was on my way to a college class, I encountered a downpour unlike any other I can remember. My windshield wipers couldn’t move fast enough for the onslaught of water. I thought about pulling over and waiting it out, but I wasn’t sure where.

Then I saw a pickup truck ahead of me. Its flashers were on, and it became my guide as we traveled thirty-miles per hour down the highway. I could see just enough road around the truck to make sure the driver was staying in his lane. I rounded curves as he did, and we made it out of the torrent alive and in one piece.

I’ve never thought of Jesus as a truck driver, but if there is anyone who can drive the highway of life and help us arrive at our destination in one piece, it’s Jesus. He knows how fast or slow to travel, and He’s ready for when an onslaught of surprises, temptations, or troubles come our way. He has the grace to see us through it.

Gaining and Sustaining Peace

How do you gain peace and sustain it? Maybe if I lived on the beach and every morning I could watch the sunrise glisten on the waters, I would have peace. Or perhaps if I had no struggles or temptations, my heart would abide in peace. But the battle between good versus evil rages on, and no life on earth is free from struggles and temptations. Even the beach has its storms and hurricanes.

2 Timothy: Winning the Victory Excerpts

Six excerpts in six weeks. Every week I’ve posted an excerpt from my Bible study, 2 Timothy: Winning the Victory, about how to win the spiritual battles of life and ministry. You can find these excerpts on my blog by looking for the picture above, or by clicking on the links below.

Is victory possible? Does God show us how to win our everyday battles with temptation, fear, selfishness, spiritual harassment, and opposition to the gospel? What “battle plan” does He lay out for dealing with life’s obstacles and hindrances? ...

Our Lord Jesus Christ Is Greater Than Any Enemy

In this final excerpt from my Bible study, 2 Timothy: Winning the Victory, I want to share with you the go-get’-em, no-holds-barred, let’s-overcome-the-obstacles-and-do-what-God-has-for-us passage. This paragraph comes from the final chapter, and compares our spiritual enemies, who may seem overwhelmingly strong at times, to our God who has almighty power.

“No matter how fierce the enemy seems—when fear cripples us, anger enrages us, or selfishness possesses us; when adversity crushes us, opposition hounds us, or temptation plagues us—God is greater. In our own strength, we may be no match for the spiritual forces fighting against us, but those forces are ...

"I Am with You"

“In the stillness of the night, God whispers, ‘I am with you.’ In the middle of the raging storm, He reassures us, ‘I am with you.’ In every joy, in every trial, in every victory, in every burden, He is with us. He strengthens us for every part of life. He strengthens us for every part of the work.”

- 2 Timothy: Winning the Victory, Day 35, p. 178

God is with us. What comforting words! Because God is with us, we can survive any storm. Because He loves us, He will enable us to overcome any trial and to shine His light in the darkest moments or in the ...

How to Fight to Win

I needed a way out. A few years ago I was going through my worst struggle. I was hoping for some miraculous key to victory that would solve everything and get me back on the right track. I didn’t realize that it was a thousand little things that would help me to win—to be continually taught and trained by God to overcome. I found help in the pastor’s sermons on Sundays, the Christian songs on the radio, the encouragement and wisdom of my parents, and most of all, the time I spent with God reading His Word. Being in God’s Word for myself enabled me to glean truths and life principles to put in my spiritual arsenal. Victory was attainable. God showed the way.

I can’t pinpoint one key to winning the victory over life’s spiritual struggles and battles. The “battle plan” for each believer will vary according to ...

Grace Is Essential for Victory

“Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2:1, NKJV). Paul used these words not only to encourage Timothy, his spiritual son, but to tell him how to keep going. Grace is a resource God has given us so we don’t quit. When schedules, problems, and hindrances threaten to overwhelm us, we can draw upon the grace of Christ to win life’s battles.

So grace is not just for salvation; it’s for our daily Christian lives. And its Source is a Person who ...

Genuine Faith Helps Us to Win

How do we get genuine faith in our generation—faith that overcomes, faith that propels us forward, faith that keeps its focus on God? Timothy had it. The apostle Paul thanked God for this kind of faith in his spiritual son. Scripture tells us that it was “genuine faith” (2 Timothy 1:5, NKJV)—sincere and fervent, tried and proven. Faith has been the hallmark of courageous believers throughout every ...
