When the Pain Won’t Go Away: An Excerpt from Breaking the Chains

Is there a pain that aches in your soul? Something someone said to you. A storm that left its mark on your heart.  A trauma or past regret.

Although pain comes into our lives in many forms, the effects are usually the same. We tend to “slow down”—our joy slows down, our energy or zeal for life slows down, and our hope. We can’t escape the gnawing at our souls, and we may miss out on opportunities that God provides. We can try to get rid of the pain or ease it, and sometimes we find a cure. One cure is lasting.

A New Release: Breaking the Chains

I was chained. You wouldn’t have been able to hear clanging links as I walked by, or see the chain that was metaphorically wrapped around my heart and mind. But for years, I struggled with chains of my own making. When I realized that they were hindering my walk with God, I wanted to be free. I just wasn’t sure how to do it.

Have you been there? Even children of God battle bad habits or detrimental ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. Jesus died to set us free from sin’s power in our lives, but we can still walk hindered. We can let fear, anxiety, anger, loneliness, and so forth hinder what God wants to do in our lives and how we relate to Him and other people. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can break free and stay free. The strategies to do it are in our new book.

Breaking the Chains: 9 Ways to Overcome Depression

A nagging at the heart. A heavy fog. A stabbing pain. Although spiritual depression comes in different forms, its effects are usually the same—lost zeal and sense of purpose, subdued energy, sadness, a weakened desire to do routine things, and even doubts about our usefulness to God and His plan.

Identify the Source

Whether I have sudden feelings of depression or they come on so gradually I don’t notice till I’m caught in a “fog,” I have to identify the cause of the depression. Sometimes it’s a prolonged, personal struggle. Sometimes it’s Satan trying to hinder me from living for God and serving Him. But as long as I don’t identify what’s going on, the fog, the nagging, the pain—it continues.

Don’t Be a Mad Monkey on a Light Pole

by Ron Gallagher

Katy here. This post on overcoming anger is our 11th post in the Breaking the Chains series. Ron Gallagher uses humor and Scripture to show the affects of anger and its causes. This is the first time he has guest written for me, and I believe you will be inspired to give anger a second thought.

Among the many things that this contentious political season has revealed is the uniquely bi-partisan nature of anger. Voters are angry, politicians are angry, party leaders are angry, and even pundits and news commentators are angry. A news story earlier this week about rescuing an escaped Chimpanzee fit in perfectly. It followed a report about a political rally featuring clips of angry people inside an arena making speeches, while a crowd of angry protesters outside were holding signs, chanting, and shouting their disapproval of everything supported by the people inside. Next up, the chimp—screaming from the top of a power pole, showing his teeth, waving his arms, and shaking his head. I couldn’t help but wonder, “Now, is he a Republican outsider, or a liberal Democrat?”

“Breaking the Chains” Series: The Halfway Point

Does your soul need freedom? Even when we are believers in Christ, our souls can become enslaved to different types of bondage—bondage to fear, guilt, worry, or depression.

Six friends and I are tackling the subject of spiritual bondage in this series called Breaking the Chains. We’re at the halfway point now ...
