I Want to Stay with You

A Bible Study Devotion from Faith, Courage, and Victory

by Katy Kauffman

Reverend Phil seemed seven feet tall to me when I was a child. He could have been a captain at sea or a firefighter or a police chief, but he was a pastor. One Sunday night, his deep voice caught my attention as he unfolded the story of a wild and violent man whose encounter with Jesus changed everything.

A demon-possessed man roamed the tomb-filled hills of the Gadarenes. Everyone feared him, and no one could tame him. They managed to shackle him, but he broke the chains. Then Jesus came to the area—the one Man who could unshackle his heart. When the man saw Jesus, he knew who He was, and he was afraid of Him. He said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me” (Mark 5:7). Jesus didn’t hurt him; He helped him. The man had many demons in him, and Jesus sent them all out of the man into a nearby herd of pigs. The pigs “ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned” (Mark 5:13 NKJV).

When the people of the area came out to see what had happened, the man who had been demon-possessed was sitting, clothed, and in his right mind. That made the people afraid. Those who had been there told the people what happened to the pigs. The people of the area wanted Jesus to leave. Reverend Phil’s characterization of their attitude toward Jesus, was memorable. It was as if they said to Him, “We don’t care where You go or what You do, as long as You leave here.” The healed man’s reaction was just the opposite: “I don’t care where You go or what You do, as long as I can go with You.”

Who Me?

A Bible Study Devotion from Faith, Courage, and Victory

by Katy Kauffman

The Brazil mission team needed someone to share the gospel in the tent meeting that night. They elected me, the youngest. I was scared. I had shared the gospel in classrooms on another trip, but never in front of a big crowd.

Earlier in the week, we had invited people to come to the tent meeting, and that night the tent was packed. I sat with my mom in the middle of the crowd, and waited for my time to speak. Although it was dark outside, the joy and brightness inside the tent stirred my soul. One of our team members gave her testimony, and another sang. While our team leader was preaching, I turned to my mom like I had so many times before, hoping for a pep talk. I told her I was scared to share, and all I can remember her saying is, “Ask God to help you.”

The Girl with Hazel Eyes – A Guest Post by Beckie Lindsey

Katy here. Today I have the privilege of sharing with you an award-winning poem and the story behind it. Can you relate to the poem below? May your heart be blessed and your dreams renewed.

The Girl with Hazel Eyes

by Beckie Lindsey

Where has she gone? That young girl from so long ago.
The memory eludes me like a cloud covering over the sun.
She had dark hair and large hazel eyes.
Those eyes that saw the world as an adventure to be had.
A world that is exciting yet dangerously uncertain,
But — with courage — could be contained.

Our God Restores (Excerpts from Faith, Courage, and Victory)

God hears. God acts. God saves.

Our God restores.

When trials, loss, sin, or unfulfilled promises steal our strength and joy, we need restoration. God can help us. When we look to Him, He supplies us with His grace and renews our outlook on life. His joy and peace once again fill our souls.

The excerpts below from my new Bible study, Faith, Courage, and Victory, show some of the many ways that God helps us and restores us.

Faith, Courage, and Victory – Who’s In It?

My new Bible study condenses the stories of twenty-four people of the Bible into one to three devotions per person. Forty devotions in Faith, Courage, and Victory give a fresh look into these well-known and beloved stories, and give a fresh perspective on how we can walk in faith, courage, and victory in our daily Christian lives.

So who’s in the book? People whose stories can help us today. ...

Faith, Courage, and Victory – What It’s All About

I learn from movies, especially action adventure movies. Do you? I like seeing a team of people work together to accomplish a goal or defeat an enemy. Their example of courage and skill inspires me to have courage in my own life and to do what God wants me to do.

The Bible is filled with the stories of real people who became overcomers. They battled struggles, temptations, and formidable enemies. They had to overcome fear and doubt to do God’s will for their lives. Their faith and courage can inspire us to live by faith and courage in our own walks with God. This is what my new Bible study is all about—learning from the real-life adventures of men and women in the Bible, who had struggles, but cooperated with God’s work in them and through them and became overcomers.
