Immanuel, Our God is with Us!

by Evelyn Wells

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).
Matthew 1:23 ESV

Many years before His birth, Isaiah foretold that Jesus would be born and that He would be called “Immanuel,” which means “God is with us.” Jesus didn’t come to earth just to be our Savior, He came to become our Lord. He came as Friend, as God Himself. He is our Helper, our Sustainer, our Protector, and our Provider. He is our Healer, full of mercy and grace. He especially is our Love. He is most assuredly the God Who is with us.

As believers we find all this is true in different times, places, and situations. Through His Holy Spirit, Jesus dwells with us. No matter what we are going through, He is in our midst. Guiding us, comforting us, loving us.

Delighting in God's Constant Presence

I expected sleepy sunlight to greet me when I pushed back the curtains, but instead, fog camped on the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Almost 500 Christian writers converged on Ridgecrest, a beautiful conference center nestled on the side of a North Carolina mountain.

Some of us took pictures of the fog and its accompanying rain-filled clouds. Others wished they had umbrellas to trek across the campus to stay as dry as possible. It wasn’t until the last morning of the conference that the fog lifted and I saw the personal relevance of our ethereal friend.

God, You’ve Been Working

Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now,
and I have been working." John 5:17, NKJV

In the shadows of my memory,
I see You working behind the scenes.
Times when I might have battled alone,
You were there, keeping my heart in Your Word,
Defeating evil forces come to take me captive.

In the secret parts of my heart,
I feel new strength growing.
Courage dissolves my fears.
Hope that I thought had died
Has come to life again.
