A Teaching Strategy that Works: Test Case

Last Tuesday I introduced three keys to an effective strategy for teaching the Bible: give your group the what, why, and how of any Bible passage. What is Scripture telling us to do or know about the Christian life? Why is this important to live out and remember? And how do we practically apply this to our everyday lives?

... Let’s take Philippians 4:8, and test our What, Why, and How strategy.

A Teaching Strategy that Works: Three Keys to a Life-Shaping Bible Lesson

My first strategy for teaching the Bible failed. I was anxious to give the tenth grade girls I taught all of the delightful things I had discovered about our Bible passage. I lost their attention quickly. The next week I picked a more effective strategy: I gave them a what and a why. The what: Follow Jesus. The why: 12 reasons to follow Jesus from Mark Chapter 1. It worked.

If you’re looking for an effective strategy to teach God’s Word, I’d like to suggest three keys. You can apply them to just about any passage of Scripture and give your listeners ...

Isaiah: Setting Things Right

The Morning after the Storm

Ominous clouds slowly cover the earth. Everything becomes darker, bleaker. An eerie gray is the forewarning of an impending storm. At first the wind gently ruffles the tree branches, but then it steadily grows in force and speed until the trees bend almost to the breaking point. The rain that began with ...

Isaiah: Setting Things Right

Jesus—the Heart’s Delight   (Isaiah 4:2)

Jesus is beautiful, glorious, excellent, and appealing to those who take hold of Him by faith. Great good awaits those who turn to Him. Jesus sustains us through the storms of life and furnishes us with hope until they are over. He calms our anxieties with His peace. He drives away fear with His comforting presence. He resolves our helplessness with His strength and power. He soothes our guilt and regret with forgiveness. He warms our hearts with His unending love. Jesus is our ...

Gaining and Sustaining Peace

How do you gain peace and sustain it? Maybe if I lived on the beach and every morning I could watch the sunrise glisten on the waters, I would have peace. Or perhaps if I had no struggles or temptations, my heart would abide in peace. But the battle between good versus evil rages on, and no life on earth is free from struggles and temptations. Even the beach has its storms and hurricanes.

Jesus assured us that although we would have adversity in the world, we could have ...

Isaiah: Setting Things Right

“Destination?”

God’s word is full of useful information that is up-to-date and relevant to our lives today. That information helps us to know what our options are in life. It shows us how to navigate our lives along the paths that take us to such pleasing “destinations” as a satisfied heart, meaningful relationships, and ...

Isaiah: Setting Things Right

On the Other Side of Confusion, Distress, and Regret

How does it feel to be swept up in the consequences of sin? Sometimes it’s our sin; sometimes we’re caught in the fallout of someone else’s sin. A careless word, a wrong decision, an unguarded moment, or a detrimental pattern of life ushers in a season of heaviness, sorrow, or struggle. What does it feel like to reap the consequences of harm, wrong, injury, or foolishness? Most of us know.

The consequences of sin trouble us in various forms. A fog of confusion creeps over us that is cold and unsettling. We don’t want this situation, but we can’t see how to fix it. We think ...

Isaiah: Setting Things Right

"What Does God Do in Our Lives?"

He rescues us. When we place our faith in God, He works to rescue our souls from famine, dryness, coldness, isolation, oppression, and wandering. He rescues our souls from famine by nourishing them with the truth. He rescues our souls from dryness by bringing joy and laughter back into life ...

What's Steering You?

What spirit drives you? Does the spirit of fear influence your everyday life, or does the Spirit of God? Does a spirit of anger hover over your heart, or a spirit of love? The word spirit means “a governing influence or disposition.”1 God doesn’t want fear or any other negative influence to govern our hearts (2 Timothy 1:7). These influences will lead us down a path we won’t want to travel. ...

Not Caveman Days

Isaiah: Setting Things Right has recently become available as an e-book. To celebrate that mile marker, I'm going to post some excerpts. The first is about God's "paintbrush" and "canvas."

Isaiah 1:1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem … (NKJV)

"A skillful painter knows how to transfer the vision in his mind to the blank canvas. The instrument that God used to put His “vision” on paper, or parchment, was not a brush, but a man named Isaiah ...
