The battlefield had long been determined. Since the demise of Lucifer and his followers, the forces of Satan had warred against the hosts of the LORD. Yet one particular battle had been foretold—the suffering of a Servant, the payment of all sin of all time, the redemption of mankind. This battlefield was the cross.
Although Scripture doesn’t reveal to us the spiritual warfare surrounding the cross, the Gospels help us to know the struggle and agony felt by those on the scene. If we stepped into the story that has been recorded for us, we would hear the jeers of the crowd, the hammering of nails, and the likely weeping of Jesus’ followers. We would see the anguish of John the disciple and others who watched their Master dying. We would see a centurion torn between doing his job and coming to the realization that this Man nailed to a cross was the Son of God.
