In Safe Hands

I kept watch over my loved one all night. My family was in the hospital for ten days about a month ago. The first night there, I could only sleep for about thirty minutes in the hospital room recliner, and then it became someone else’s turn to attempt to sleep. I sat in a backless computer chair near the hospital bed and watched my loved one breathe in and out as he slept. I watched and prayed.

Overcoming Fear with Peace – A Guest Post by Carol A. Akin

God’s plan is that we do not live in fear, but rather enjoy His peace. In fact, I’ve heard many times that there are 365 times in the Bible that we are encouraged to fear not or do not fear. This leads me to a couple of key assumptions:

  1. God knows that humans are frail (after all He made us from dust) and are inclined to fear.
  2. We need constant reassurance that everything is going to be ok.
  3. He loves us and desires that we live in peace, free from fear.

Finding Peace

“The LORD will give strength to His people; the LORD will bless His people with peace.” Psalm 29:11, NKJV

Peace is a beautiful word. I once pictured peace as gentle waves lapping onto a shore. Since I’ve seen a little more of life’s struggles, now I picture peace as a calm heart in the midst of a storm. I understand from experience that even though our circumstances aren’t trouble-free, we can have God’s peace on the inside. He does calm storms (Psalm 107:29). Either within or without. ...

Guest Post by Erin Elizabeth Austin: It’s a Wonderful Life

This week’s theme for my blog and Facebook page is peace. I have the privilege of posting a devotion today by my friend, Erin Austin. I just joined her ministry as the designer of Broken but Priceless: The Magazine. Tomorrow we launch the magazine, so it’s only appropriate for her to guest blog for me today! She writes a touching devotion about peace—something we all need and want. You’ll get to know her a little more in this post, and I pray you experience the peace she describes. ...

Isaiah: Setting Things Right

Jesus—the Heart’s Delight   (Isaiah 4:2)

Jesus is beautiful, glorious, excellent, and appealing to those who take hold of Him by faith. Great good awaits those who turn to Him. Jesus sustains us through the storms of life and furnishes us with hope until they are over. He calms our anxieties with His peace. He drives away fear with His comforting presence. He resolves our helplessness with His strength and power. He soothes our guilt and regret with forgiveness. He warms our hearts with His unending love. Jesus is our ...

Gaining and Sustaining Peace

How do you gain peace and sustain it? Maybe if I lived on the beach and every morning I could watch the sunrise glisten on the waters, I would have peace. Or perhaps if I had no struggles or temptations, my heart would abide in peace. But the battle between good versus evil rages on, and no life on earth is free from struggles and temptations. Even the beach has its storms and hurricanes.

Jesus assured us that although we would have adversity in the world, we could have ...

Isaiah: Setting Things Right

Isaiah 2:2-4 gives us some good news concerning the future.

A World Set Right

In the latter days, priorities and values will change from what they are now. People will understand the value of knowing God and His word, and they will come to Him to learn. They will come, not just to get information or to hear a new idea or philosophy, but to embrace His word and His ways, to be conformed to them, and to practice ...

What's Steering You?

What spirit drives you? Does the spirit of fear influence your everyday life, or does the Spirit of God? Does a spirit of anger hover over your heart, or a spirit of love? The word spirit means “a governing influence or disposition.”1 God doesn’t want fear or any other negative influence to govern our hearts (2 Timothy 1:7). These influences will lead us down a path we won’t want to travel. ...

Peace, Be Still

“Lord, don’t You care?” The disciples woke Jesus up. A storm had engulfed them on the Sea of Galilee. Waves beat hard on them, filling the boat. They were going to sink. “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” (Mark 4:38 NKJV). In the midst of the raging storm, the disciples were afraid they were going to die, and there Jesus was, sleeping. He got up and commanded the wind, “’Peace, be still!’” (Mark 4:39 NKJV). The wind ceased. Jesus turned to the disciples, and asked them, “’Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?’” (Mark 4:40 NKJV). Faith in Jesus would have given them security in the storm. ...
