Building Faith through the Storms of Life

by Jennifer DeFrates

A few years ago, preparations for hip surgery revealed a giant mass in my abdomen. Test after test and specialists all over two states said removing it might kill me, estimating a fifty percent chance of dying during the procedure.

One night, I remember rocking my then three-year-old daughter to sleep wondering how my death would affect her life and my family. Choking back sobs, I prayed that if my death were necessary in God’s plan for my family, then I would trust Him. But I didn’t want to let go of this life just yet.

Forward: A Poem for the New Year

by Katy Kauffman

"And the LORD, He is the one who goes before you.
He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you;
Do not fear nor be dismayed."
Deuteronomy 31:8 NKJV

On this cold winter’s evening,

I think about this year’s plight.

Days it was hard just being,

Trying to have enough might.

Now the journey continues,

New joys but also trials.

Challenges, difficult news.

What will be in future miles?

God Is into the Details

Have you ever known that God would provide something for you, but you weren’t sure of the details? How would He do it? When? How much were you supposed to do to help things move along? Did He just want you to wait? Details, details.

After a walk through the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., I am even more convinced that God is into the details of our lives. I saw minerals that boasted an array of spectacular colors—rose pink, turquoise, deep royal blue, transparent yellow. I held curious butterflies and was mesmerized by their fragile, spotted wings. I walked through halls displaying skeletons of numerous animals, showing God’s handiwork in piecing together living beings, giving them flexibility where they needed it and rigidity as well.

Details. God loves details.

Finding Rest for Your Soul

Go-go-go. That’s probably the mode our souls and bodies have been in since Thanksgiving. People to see, events to attend, food to make, and presents to buy. Now that Christmas is over, a new year is about to begin. I am looking forward to settling back into a routine, but also I am dreading a little the pressure of deadlines and the not-so-good surprises that the new year may bring.

How can we find rest for our souls—rest from the busy-ness of life and rest from life’s anxieties and pressures? By remembering Who takes care of us and spending time with Him.

God, You’ve Been Working

Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now,
and I have been working." John 5:17, NKJV

In the shadows of my memory,
I see You working behind the scenes.
Times when I might have battled alone,
You were there, keeping my heart in Your Word,
Defeating evil forces come to take me captive.

In the secret parts of my heart,
I feel new strength growing.
Courage dissolves my fears.
Hope that I thought had died
Has come to life again.

Overcoming Fear with Peace – A Guest Post by Carol A. Akin

God’s plan is that we do not live in fear, but rather enjoy His peace. In fact, I’ve heard many times that there are 365 times in the Bible that we are encouraged to fear not or do not fear. This leads me to a couple of key assumptions:

  1. God knows that humans are frail (after all He made us from dust) and are inclined to fear.
  2. We need constant reassurance that everything is going to be ok.
  3. He loves us and desires that we live in peace, free from fear.

The Silent Prayer

Have you ever prayed so hard for something that you said no words aloud, but you cried out to God in your heart?

Some prayers originate from the deepest part of our souls, born out of desperation or anguish. Hannah prayed one of those prayers.

Keep Trusting God

Sitting on the mountain top, you don’t want to leave. Whether it’s been a week at a youth camp, a writers conference, a vacation with much-needed family time, or a special quiet time with God, we may be hesitant to get back into “real life.” Like in the picture above, we can’t see what’s in the valley. The clouds obstruct our view. We don’t know what struggles we’ll face or what joys we’ll encounter. But there is One who sees all and knows all.

Our God Restores (Excerpts from Faith, Courage, and Victory)

God hears. God acts. God saves.

Our God restores.

When trials, loss, sin, or unfulfilled promises steal our strength and joy, we need restoration. God can help us. When we look to Him, He supplies us with His grace and renews our outlook on life. His joy and peace once again fill our souls.

The excerpts below from my new Bible study, Faith, Courage, and Victory, show some of the many ways that God helps us and restores us.
