Bible Study Helps

I love the beginning of a new Bible study semester. Every September, men and women gather at churches or in homes to study and discuss God’s Word. New friendships will be made, and prayer requests will be lifted up. Some will bake scrumptious goodies that will delight hungry tummies. The best part is diving into a book of the Bible or a particular topic and understanding how God’s Word applies to life today. Do you like the start of a new Bible study season?

As new groups are coming together or old groups are meeting again after summer break, I’d like to offer some Bible Study Helps, such as 5 ways to find application in the Bible and 4 tips for writing and teaching Bible Studies. These are found on a new page on our website. ...

Faith, Courage, and Victory – Who’s In It?

My new Bible study condenses the stories of twenty-four people of the Bible into one to three devotions per person. Forty devotions in Faith, Courage, and Victory give a fresh look into these well-known and beloved stories, and give a fresh perspective on how we can walk in faith, courage, and victory in our daily Christian lives.

So who’s in the book? People whose stories can help us today. ...

Faith, Courage, and Victory – What It’s All About

I learn from movies, especially action adventure movies. Do you? I like seeing a team of people work together to accomplish a goal or defeat an enemy. Their example of courage and skill inspires me to have courage in my own life and to do what God wants me to do.

The Bible is filled with the stories of real people who became overcomers. They battled struggles, temptations, and formidable enemies. They had to overcome fear and doubt to do God’s will for their lives. Their faith and courage can inspire us to live by faith and courage in our own walks with God. This is what my new Bible study is all about—learning from the real-life adventures of men and women in the Bible, who had struggles, but cooperated with God’s work in them and through them and became overcomers.

Comparing Bible Study Styles

Who do you love? We all have our favorites—those Bible study authors we like to read again and again. We like to hear how they explain God’s Word and apply it to our everyday lives. They equip us for life and get us through rough times. Our favorite authors have personalities we admire and stories we can relate to as they share from the heart and show what God has taught them.

In this post, I’d like to compare the styles of Bible teachers and the formats of their books. But first, let me share with you some of my favorites. ...

A Storehouse of Blessing: The Benefits of Personal Bible Study

When Satan launches fiery missiles our way, we need a fortress of defense for protection. When trials and uncontrollable circumstances threaten to shake our foundation, we need a solid rock to stand on. When doubts and fears cloud our joy and vision, we need the light of God Himself to pierce through the fog and bring hope.

The Word of God is our sure defense against the enemy, our solid foundation through the storms of life, and our victory over fears and anxieties. The Bible is a handbook for living. Guiding us from the earliest age of understanding to our final days, it traces God’s path for our lives ...

A Teaching Strategy that Works: Test Case

Last Tuesday I introduced three keys to an effective strategy for teaching the Bible: give your group the what, why, and how of any Bible passage. What is Scripture telling us to do or know about the Christian life? Why is this important to live out and remember? And how do we practically apply this to our everyday lives?

... Let’s take Philippians 4:8, and test our What, Why, and How strategy.

A Teaching Strategy that Works: Three Keys to a Life-Shaping Bible Lesson

My first strategy for teaching the Bible failed. I was anxious to give the tenth grade girls I taught all of the delightful things I had discovered about our Bible passage. I lost their attention quickly. The next week I picked a more effective strategy: I gave them a what and a why. The what: Follow Jesus. The why: 12 reasons to follow Jesus from Mark Chapter 1. It worked.

If you’re looking for an effective strategy to teach God’s Word, I’d like to suggest three keys. You can apply them to just about any passage of Scripture and give your listeners ...
