10 Bible Verses that Give Us Grace to Pray

Dr. Charles Stanley once said that when you don’t know what to pray, say one word and God will understand. We can simply say, “Father.”

Wrapped up in that one word is a plea for help directed to the One who loves us perfectly, knows all things, and has the power to do anything.

“Father.” A beautiful word, a beautiful reality. The God who made the universe is our close and personal heavenly Father when we believe in His Son for our eternal salvation. Eternal life isn’t just for heaven; it starts here. Life is about knowing God (John 17:3), loving God and others (Mark 12:30-31), and making Him known (Matthew 28:18-20). And whenever we need help, we can appeal to our Father because He loves us (John 16:26-27).

Scripture is filled with motivations to pray—it shows us who God is and what He is capable of. So when we need to say more than just one word in prayer, we can find reasons to open our hearts to God and ask Him for what we need.

10 Grace-Giving Verses for Prayer

The following verses give us grace to pray, because they help us to open our hearts to God and find the words. They show us why we should depend on God for what we need. If you underline verses in your Bible, take a few minutes to find a pen and underline these verses. Or write some on an index card to keep at your favorite prayer spot.

1. “Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” (Psalm 62:8 NKJV)
2. “If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:14 ESV)
3. “Be my strong refuge, to which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.” (Psalm 71:3 NKJV)
4. “Indeed before the day was, I am He; and there is no one who can deliver out of My hand; I work, and who will reverse it?” (Isaiah 43:13 NKJV)

Close and powerful. Knowledgeable and majestic. Our refuge and safe-haven. Our storm-calmer and guide. That’s who our great God is.

When you need the strength to pray, come back to these verses again and again. Memorize one or a few to tuck away in your heart. Let their truths motivate you to go to God first for help and to trust Him with the outcome.
