Build the House of God
In Ezra Ch. 6, the “house of God” (v.3, 5, 7, 8, 12, 16, 17, 22) was the temple, and it needed to be rebuilt because the Babylonians had destroyed it. Today the house of God is the church. Believers are its “living stones” (1 Peter 2:5 NKJV), and we “are being built together for a dwelling place of God” (Ephesians 2:22 NKJV).
Let’s apply the principles of this chapter to Christian authority in the church and to the building and completing of God’s “house” in present times. What should Godly authorities be doing in the church?
Ch. 6 Godly authorities see that the work of building God’s house is finished, all the way to the joy.
What should Godly authorities do?
v.1-5 Build the house of God, and restore anything that has been taken from it.
v.6-7 Keep adversaries far from the work.
v.8-10 Furnish resources, so the work is not hindered.
v.11-12 Make it clear that altering instructions and destructive tactics will not be tolerated.
v.13-17 Stand behind the work of building God’s house, all the way to the joyous finish.
v.18-20 Help people celebrate their deliverance from bondage and sin.
v.21 Share fellowship with those who have returned from captivity or who have separated themselves from sin and worldliness to seek the LORD.
What does God do?
v.22 The LORD makes those people joyful, who separate themselves to purity, and He turns the hearts of earthly authorities toward His people to strengthen them in His work.
Other Application - What should Godly authorities do?
v.1 Go to the trouble to investigate a problem to find the truth. (“The honor of kings is to search out a matter” [Proverbs 25:2 KJV].)
v.3, 7, 12 Initiate or promote action.
v.1-7, 8-12 Support and continue previously authorized work.
v.7, 12 Provide protection for the work of building.
v.11 Deal decisively with those who change their instructions.
v.13 Do what is commanded.
v.14-15 Build until the “house” is finished.
v.14 Align their commands with God’s.
v.21 Stay pure from bondage and sin.
Ch. 6 Godly authorities build His house, protect the progress of the work, furnish resources to build, see that the work is finished, stay pure, fellowship with the people, and strengthen those who do the work.
