Genuine Faith Helps Us to Win

How do we get genuine faith in our generation—faith that overcomes, faith that propels us forward, faith that keeps its focus on God? Timothy had it. The apostle Paul thanked God for this kind of faith in his spiritual son. Scripture tells us that it was “genuine faith” (2 Timothy 1:5, NKJV)—sincere and fervent, tried and proven. Faith has been the hallmark of courageous believers throughout every generation. It has enabled them to face overwhelming spiritual battles and win. Their faith enabled them to keep walking with God, to do His will for their lives, and to make a difference in the world around them. Today we still have overwhelming spiritual battles and struggles, but we also have a mighty God who enables us to win.

This next excerpt from 2 Timothy: Winning the Victory comes from Chapter 1, Day 4. We will have what it takes to face life’s challenges and not to be overrun when we depend on God who controls all things and strengthens us for each day’s adventures and circumstances.

“You’ve Got What It Takes”

“Hebrews 11, that famous hall of faith, is filled with people who ran their race with faith, believing God for the impossible. They stayed in step with God’s plan, following Him even when they couldn’t see where the path would lead. Noah built an ark when rain had never touched the earth. Abraham left his homeland for an unknown place. Joseph endured persecution and mistreatment. Moses overcame personal doubts and questions.

God used these 'forefathers' (2 Tim 1:3) and their faith to further His plan. Through Noah, God saved a family and the human race from the floodwaters of judgment. Through Abraham, God brought forth a nation that would be His chosen people on the earth. Through Joseph and Moses, God saved a nation from famine and slavery. When we walk by faith and not by sight, we depend on the One who sees what we can’t see—the difference He can make through us.

How do we keep to the course that God sets for our lives, especially when we don’t know how things will turn out? Genuine faith is fueled by the truth we take to heart and by our personal experience with God. We hold onto Him because He holds onto us, reassuring us of His love and power, reaffirming His involvement in our lives. An ever-growing, ever-constant relationship with God makes us certain of what we believe and enables us to run with endurance. If we ever lose stamina or give in to pressure from the world, He knows how to get us back on track. He infuses us with His grace, stirs us with His love, and strengthens us with His peace. Genuine faith—a connection to God and a firm belief in His Word—enables us to win the victory.”

This kind of faith is possible as we grow in our relationship with God and look to Him to help us with whatever we face. When we are willing vessels, God can do amazing things in us and through us! God sees what we can’t—the difference He can make through us.
