Lists – “Born Again”

Jesus answered and said to him [Nicodemus], Truly, truly, I say to you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3 AKJV*)

When we put our faith in Jesus, we are “born again” spiritually, and God gives us many precious birthday gifts.

What does it mean to be “born again”?

A.  We are changed on the inside.

1.  We are given by God a new heart that is spiritually alive to Him.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a new heart of flesh.  (Ezekiel 36:26 NKJV)

2.  We receive the Person of Jesus Christ.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. (Galatians 2:20 ESV)

3.  We are indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

Know you not that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?  (1 Corinthians 3:16 AKJV)

4. We are cleansed and forgiven of all sin.

The blood of Jesus Christ … cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:7 NKJV)

5.  We are freed from the dominion (rule) of sin and death.

Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him (Christ), that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin.  (Romans 6:6-7 NKJV)

B.  We have a changed standing before God.

1. We are adopted legally into the family of God.

When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, … that we might receive the adoption of sons. … Why you are no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. (Galatians 4:4-5, 7 AKJV)

2.  We are freed from the condemnation of sin and death.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2 KJV)

3.  We are justified in the sight of God by faith in Jesus Christ.

We know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus.  (Galatians 2:16 KJV)

4. We have peace with God through Jesus Christ.

Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1 KJV)

Having made peace through the blood of his [Christ’s] cross.  (Colossians 1:20 KJV)

5.  We have access to God through Christ by the Spirit.

Now in Christ Jesus you … have been brought near by the blood of Christ. … For through [Christ] we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.  (Ephesians 2:13, 18 KJV)

6.  We enter the kingdom of God.

Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God. (Ephesians 2:19 NKJV)

C.  We inherit certain benefits and privileges.

1.  We are given all things that are essential for Godliness.

His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that has called us to glory and virtue.  (2 Peter 1:3 AKJV)

2.  We receive the power of God to do His will.

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.  (Acts 1:8 ESV)

3.  We receive a spiritual gift from God to equip us to serve the body of Christ in love.

As every man has received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (1 Peter 4:10 AKJV)
