The Mystery of Eternal Life: What is it, how do we get it, and what are its priorities, privileges, and challenges? (based on John 17)
What is it? – Eternal life is knowing the only true God and (His Son) Jesus Christ. (John 17:3)
How do we get it? – Jesus has the authority to give people eternal life. (v.1-2)
What is the priority of those who have it on the earth? – Like Jesus, to finish the work God has given us to do. (v.4)
What do believers need in order to fulfill our purpose on the earth?
We need God to sustain us and strengthen us to keep His word and to make Himself and Jesus known in the world. (v.5-10)
We need God to guard us and keep us from the dangers of the world and the devil. (v.11-16)
We need God to cleanse us and fit us for the work He has for us to do. (v.17-19)
We need God to help us grow into a perfect oneness with Himself and with other believers. (v.20-23)
We need to be motivated and energized by the excellencies of Jesus and receive the testimony that He gives us of the Father, that love may prevail. (v.24-26)1
Commentary Note on “that they all may be one” (v.21, NKJV):
“The Spirit of Christ, illuminating, transforming, and reigning in the hearts of the genuine disciples of Christ, drawing them to each other as members of one family, and prompting them to loving cooperation for the good of the world—this is what, when sufficiently glowing and extended, shall force conviction upon the world that Christianity is divine.”2
