Wise men in the East sought Jesus. (So can we this Christmas season and all year long.) They followed a star to Jerusalem, saying,
“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:2 NKJV)
When King Herod heard about it, he asked the religious officials for the location. They answered him from Scripture.
“But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a Ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.” (Matthew 2:6 NKJV)
Jesus is our Savior; He is our Immanuel. And notice how these verses describe Jesus. He is also a King, a great and powerful King. The second verse tells us that Jesus is a Ruler who shepherds God’s people. How gracious, how caring and understanding that Someone who is a King, a Ruler, would also be a Shepherd. Someone to watch over us, to care for us, and to lead us to what we need for every part of life. Someone to lead us every day into an abundant life.
And this is not a temporary position for Jesus. When the angel told Mary that she would be Christ’s mother, he also told her that God’s Son would have a kingdom and how long it would last:
The angel said to her, Fear not, Mary: for you have found favor with God. And, behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give to him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (Luke 1:30-33 AKJV)
Jesus’ loving, wise, and comforting leadership in our lives will never end. We have a forever King, a forever Ruler who shepherds us with love and wisdom every day. Merry Christmas!
